Understanding Paint Polishing and Scratch Removal

Not every scratch or defect can be removed with polishing, and we believe in setting clear expectations. Here’s an easy rule of thumb:

If your fingernail catches in the scratch, polishing will not fully remove the defect.

Those deeper scratches may require advanced techniques like wet sanding or touch-up work. Our goal is to restore your paint safely, preserving as much clear coat as possible to maintain the long-term health of your finish.

Why ProTech’s Process is Safer

Paint correction is an art and a science. Unlike high-volume shops that rush through vehicles and risk burning through clear coat or causing irreversible damage, ProTech Detailing takes a precision-based approach. We measure your paint thickness panel by panel and use the least aggressive method necessary to achieve incredible results while protecting your investment.

Levels of Paint Correction Explained

Multi-Stage Paint Correction

For vehicles with heavier defects—such as deep swirl marks, heavier scratches, or significant oxidation—a multi-stage correction is not just recommended, it’s essential. This advanced process involves several steps using different combinations of cutting compounds, pads, and polishing techniques to gradually refine the paint, maximizing clarity, depth, and gloss. The transformation is dramatic, often leaving the finish looking better than when it first left the showroom. It’s important to note that if you’re already noticing signs of dull paint or oxidation, this typically indicates clear coat damage. While we can restore an incredible level of shine and bring back much of the depth and color, paint correction cannot replace clear coat that has been permanently degraded or thinned over time. In these situations, we’ll discuss realistic results with you upfront and may recommend protective solutions—like a ceramic coating—to preserve the integrity of your paint for the long term.

Wet Sanding

Wet sanding is a specialized process reserved for severe defects or texture removal, like orange peel or deep scratches that other polishing methods cannot fix. This advanced technique requires expert skill to ensure the paint’s safety and a flawless finish. Wet sanding is rarely needed but delivers a truly perfect result when performed by trained professionals.

Paint Enhancement Polish

A paint enhancement is a single-step polish designed to add depth, gloss, and clarity without heavy defect removal. It’s perfect for vehicles in good condition that need a refresh or for clients preparing for protective coatings like ceramic. While it doesn’t remove deeper scratches, it significantly improves the overall look of your paint and is more cost-effective than a full blown paint correction service.

Single-Stage Paint Correction

Single-stage correction uses a more aggressive polish to remove the majority of light to moderate swirls and defects in a single pass, restoring depth and gloss to your vehicle’s paint. This level of correction is ideal for daily drivers with lighter imperfections and works exceptionally well on vehicles that don’t require multiple polishing steps to achieve noticeable results. However, for vehicles with soft paint systems or dark-colored finishes, a single-stage polish may not deliver a completely flawless finish, and a multi-stage correction is often recommended to achieve the level of refinement and clarity those surfaces demand.

Common Types of Defects Corrected with Paint Polishing

Every vehicle’s paint tells a story, and at ProTech Detailing, our job is to rewrite that story with precision and care. Over time, normal driving conditions expose your car to countless contaminants and physical contact, leaving visible and sometimes microscopic imperfections in the paint. While not all defects can be completely removed, many can be dramatically reduced—or even eliminated—with our expert polishing process.

Some of the most common defects we correct include:

Swirl Marks –
Caused by improper washing techniques or automatic car washes, creating spiderweb-like patterns that dull your car’s finish.
Marring –
Light surface abrasions that reduce gloss and clarity but are easily corrected with professional polishing.
Random Isolated Deep Scratches (RIDS) –
Deeper scratches that may require targeted spot correction but can often be softened to reduce visibility.
Bird Dropping Etching –
Acidic residue from bird droppings that etches into clear coat if not removed quickly.
Water Spots –
Mineral deposits from hard water that dry onto the surface, leaving etched rings or dull patches.
Paint Transfer Marks –
Abrasions and color transfer caused by minor scrapes with objects like shopping carts or car doors.
Oxidation and UV Damage –
Common in Arizona’s intense sun, leaving paint chalky and faded without proper care.
Sanding Marks –
Often left behind after bodywork or repairs, requiring multi-step polishing to restore a flawless finish.

FAQs

Car Polishing

Absolutely! We carry separate ceramic coatings for individual surfaces such as paint, plastic, windows, and wheels (at an additional price). Our shop automatically includes a one year ceramic coating to all painted surfaces.
This is an “it depends” kind of answer. After the paint is polished, it comes down to how well you maintain the vehicle afterwards. If you take it through a $5 car wash, you can easily get back to square one in a matter of weeks. If you properly wash and dry your vehicle, the results will stay for a much longer than compared to if you use a dirty towel and water to wash your vehicle.
Yes! We offer all our paint correction and ceramic coating services at our shop location. Depending on the level of work, it can take 2 to 3 days to complete the service.
Level 1 paint polishing will remove 75 to 85% of the imperfections in your paint.
Level 2 paint polishing will remove 85 to 90% of the imperfections in your paint.

For most vehicles, Level 1 will be just fine and a level 2 is for paint systems that are soft.

Why Paint Correction Transforms Your Vehicle

Correcting these defects isn’t just about making paint shiny—it’s about restoring your car to its highest visual potential while protecting its long-term health. Here’s what sets professional paint correction apart:
True Color Restoration –

A polished surface allows the original color depth and vibrancy to shine through, often looking better than the day it rolled off the showroom floor.

Unmatched Gloss and Clarity –

By refining the paint surface at a microscopic level, light reflects evenly, creating a rich, mirror-like finish.

Improved Surface Reflectivity –

Crisp, sharp reflections of objects around the car showcase a level of detail that raw, uncorrected paint simply can’t match.

Enhanced Transparency –

On metallic or pearl finishes, proper correction enhances the clarity of the flake, adding depth and dimension.

The Perfect Foundation for Protection –

Polished paint provides the clean, smooth surface needed for optimal bonding of ceramic coatings or paint protection film, maximizing performance and durability.
